Judd Apatow tribute art show, Gallery 1988 Melrose

Hey all,
Here's my complete piece for the Judd Apatow tribute art show, taking place on Tuesday, December 4th at Gallery 1988: Melrose (7020 Melrose Ave. at LaBrea) from 7-10pm. If you want to attend, you must contact the gallery to RSVP. Go to http://nineteeneightyeight.com/ for the details...

As a big toy and comic fan myself, I couldn't help to pay tribute to one of the "supporting characters" in Andy's apartment in "The 40 Year Old Virgin". I also grew up as a fan of the old MEGO World's Greatest Super-Hero Collection, and had an Aquaman figure in my collection. I hope you all dig...

Hey all,
If you don't have plans on Sunday, and you're in the Greater Philly area, come to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA for the Inaugural RETRO-CON, celebrating the movies, TV shows, video games, and toys of the 1980's (and then some). I will be in attendance, along with a bunch of good pals, like Dave "Montygog" Perillo, Tom "Strongstuff" Whalen, Ian "Hasunow" Glaubinger, Chri
s from Acidfreegallery. Also at the show, will be a few of the voice actors from your favorite 1980's animated TV shows, like "Thundercats" and "Transformers" in addition to many retailers selling everything from toys, t-shirts, video game paraphenalia, etc. Members of the local Ghostbusters club and Garrison Carida, part of the 501st Legion (“The World’s Definitive Imperial Star Wars Costuming Organization") will also be there, posing for pictures with fans...

NYCC and Spoke Art "Bad Dads" show...

I'll be in attendance at New York Comic-Con this coming Friday and Saturday, October 12th and 13th, merely as a fan, not as an exhibitor, but I will have a piece on display at Spoke Art's booth (#3220) as part of their "Bad Dads" art tribute to the films of Wes Anderson. You'll probably also see me hanging around the booth of Acidfree Gallery (booth #1681), as they will be offering limited edition licensed Hasbro prints by good pals Dave Perillo and Tom Whalen. Go to http://acidfreegallery.blogspot.com/ for the details...

This is a tease for the upcoming "Bad Dads: An Art Show Tribute to the Films of Wes Anderson" which will be on display first at New York Comic Con, October 11th-14th at booth #3220, and then at the Spoke Art gallery in San Francisco starting on October 26th. I won't even tell you what film it is paying tribute to. It'll be fun to read people's guesses...

I'll also be a guest at the upcoming Retro-Con, taking place on November 11th at the The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center 100 Station Avenue Oaks, PA 19456, from 9am to 5pm. Go to http://retrocons.com/ for all the details...

Big Weekend! Art Show & Comic-con!

Hey all,
I've got one small thing to show you, but first I wanted to let you know that I've got a few things going on this weekend.
First, I'll be showing some of my work at Comics & More at the King of Prussia Mall in King of Prussia, PA this Friday night, September 7th from 7-9pm. I'll have about 10-15 pieces on display, all available for purchase, including some of my most recent work, such as my "Breaking Bad" piece for the BreakingGifs.com and the tribute to "Rock n' Roll High School" that was recently a part of "Crazy4Cult: NYC" with Gallery 1988. Details at http://www.kingofprussia.com/comicsandmore/

Also, C&M will also be one of the very few places that Whovians will be able to find the newly reprinted "Lords of Gallifrey" shirt, previously only available on Teefury.com. After an onslaught of emails from folks that missed it on the day of sale, (or folks who saw a friend wearing it, and decided that they wanted one, too) I decided to finally get it reprinted.

Secondly, Saturday and Sunday will see me in Artist's Alley at the legendary Baltimore Comic-Con. I'll be at table 144 with good pal, amazing artist, and obnoxious "older brother", Dave "Montygog" Perillo.
I will also have a great deal of work on hand, including the aforementioned "Lords of Gallifrey" shirt in  various sizes, while supplies last.

So if you've got nothing going on this weekend, come stalk me and support the arts at the same time. You'll be glad that you did...

Myths & Monsters: Jersey Devil

This is the full reveal of my submission to the "Myths & Monsters" art show taking place at the (virtual) art gallery, Acid Free Gallery, located only on the "interwebs" at http://acidfreegallery.com. This was inspired by the legend of the creature that roams the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Also inspired by time spent growing up in the Garden State, and it's penchant for Heavy Metal bands performing at it's greatest musical venue, the Meadowlands Arena. I saw many a horrible spectacle there, both on and off of the stage, and I'll cherish those moments...

Crazy 4 Cult 6 NYC! (with a sneak peak)

Hey all,
By now, you may have heard the news that this year's Crazy 4 Cult, presented by Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles, is traveling to the east coast this year, and taking over New York City!

I'm lucky enough to be a part of this for the second year in a row, with other friends like Tom Whalen, Dave Perillo, Ian Glaubinger, Jason Liwag, and 195 other artists...

I'm very proud of my submission for this show, and being that it's in NYC this year, I figured I'd have to reflect on that with my subject matter. For those that don't know, Crazy 4 Cult is an annual show in it's 6th year that pays tribute to "cult films", ranging from comedies to science fiction to action films, etc. I'm just going to give you a little taste, and I'll let you figure out what my inspiration is. This will be easy to guess for anyone that knows me, even just a little...

If you can make the connection, let me know. Even if you can't, just take a guess. Gabba Gabba Hey!
Your pal,
Derby

Diana Krall Summer Nights Tour poster

Hey all,
I was just given to okay to show this piece off! A few months ago, I was approached by Diana Krall's management to come up with some ideas for a tour poster that would be given to concert goers that participated in the "VIP package". The poster would be signed by Diana, and makes a great limited edition, hard to get item. I just got my samples yesterday, and they came out great. It was tough to come up with ideas for her that reflected the type of music she does, and her overall "persona". I took inspiration from old jazz albums, creating abstract images of musical instruments and borrowing color schemes from old Blue Note and Verve album covers. The photo, shot by Marco Grob, is what really makes the poster "pop", in my opinion...

12" x 18"
4 color screenprint
available only through DianaKrall.com

At Least I have Chicken...

Did this piece for the upcoming "MEMES" show at Gallery 1988: Melrose in Los Angeles, opening on May 4th, from 7-10 pm at 7020 Melrose. Inspired by the last line of Leeroy Jenkins' infamous rant, I found it to be an amazing coincidence that both Leeroy and the Colonel both had white hair and a goatee. The rest of the pieces fell into place from there...

Derby art on 30 Rock? Wha?

Hey all,
I just wanted to share a little tidbit of fun that raised it's head during the recent premiere of "30 Rock" on NBC. My Elvis Costello inspired "Death Wears a Big Hat" print made an appearance in Liz Lemon's office, seen in the image above, directly above Liz's head. In an attempt to make a long story short, Tina's older brother is a buddy of mine as well as a big Elvis Costello fan. Tina is an enthusiastic fan of EC as well, so Peter gave the framed and matted pic to his sister as a birthday gift. It graced the wall of her dressing room until she decided to give me worldwide exposure, and added it to the set. It was quite a nice surprise... Thanks for the "shout-out", Tina!

Hey all,
Happy Freakin' New Year! Let's get 2012 started with a Pee Wee Herman-Inspired shirt design at Teefury.com, going up for sale on Wednesday, January 11 for $10 (+ about $2.50 for s&h) for 24 hours only. This design was originally created as part of the "I Know You Art, But What Am I?" Pee Wee Herman tribute art show at Gallery 1988 last year (which there are still a handful left at Gallery1988.com.. nudge, nudge... wink, wink)...
